The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the recorded birth time and place.
Lagna sets the first house and the sequence of all twelve houses. Because it changes roughly every two hours, an inaccurate birth time can alter the Lagna, house cusps, and later interpretation.

One of the twelve zodiac signs; the report should specify which planet or chart point occupies it.
In everyday Indian astrology, 'your Rashi' often means Chandra Rashi, the sign containing the Moon. In calculation tables, however, Rashi can simply mean any zodiac sign, so read the column heading and context.

One of 27 equal divisions of the sidereal zodiac used to locate the Moon and other planets more precisely.
The Moon's birth Nakshatra and its four-part Pada are used in temperament descriptions and to establish the starting balance of Vimshottari Dasha. Nakshatra is more specific than Moon sign, but it is still only one part of the chart.

One of twelve areas of the horoscope associated with different fields of experience.
For example, the 1st house concerns self and embodiment, the 7th partnerships, and the 10th work and public responsibility. A house is judged through its sign, lord, occupants, aspects, strength, and relevant divisional charts—not from its number alone.

An astrological influence or 'seizer'; in Jyotisha this includes the Sun, Moon, five visible planets, Rahu, and Ketu.
Graha does not map perfectly to the modern astronomical word planet, because the Sun and Moon are included and Rahu–Ketu are mathematical lunar nodes. Their results depend on rulership, placement, dignity, aspects, conjunctions, and timing.

A divisional chart created by dividing each zodiac sign into nine parts.
Navamsha is classically important for examining the strength and maturity of planets and for marriage-related judgement. It supplements the main D1/Rashi chart; it should not be read as a replacement for it.

A major planetary period within a Dasha system, most commonly Vimshottari Dasha.
The Mahadasha lord establishes the broad theme and areas activated during its span. Results are judged from that planet's house lordship, placement, strength, associations, divisional positions, and the sub-period currently operating.

A planetary sub-period operating inside a Mahadasha.
Antardasha narrows the timing and shows how its lord interacts with the Mahadasha lord and the natal chart. It is not an independent prediction; the hierarchy of major period, sub-period, finer periods, and transits must be kept intact.

The unexpired portion of the first Mahadasha remaining at the time of birth.
In Vimshottari Dasha it is calculated from how far the Moon had travelled through its Nakshatra. This is why a table may begin part-way through a planet's full period rather than showing the planet's complete standard duration.

The current movement of planets compared with the natal chart.
Transits describe the changing background and can activate natal promises during suitable Dashas. They do not erase the birth chart or produce the same outcome for everyone with the same Moon sign.
Also written as: Sāḍe Sātī · Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year transit
The period when sidereal Saturn transits the sign before the natal Moon sign, the Moon sign itself, and the sign after it.
Its total span is approximately seven and a half years and is usually discussed in three phases. It is a transit condition, not a permanent natal Dosha, and its experience depends on the complete chart, Saturn's condition, Dashas, and other transits.

The two opposite points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic.
They are mathematical nodes rather than physical planets and are always 180 degrees apart. In interpretation they are associated with eclipses, intensification, attachment and release, but their actual results depend heavily on sign, house, dispositors, conjunctions, and Dasha.

A defined relationship or combination of planets, signs, houses, or lords that carries a stated astrological potential.
A named Yoga is not automatically strong or continuously active. Its planets must be assessed for dignity, house placement, affliction, cancellation, divisional support, and relevant Dasha timing.

A traditional label for a chart condition considered difficult or imbalanced under particular rules.
Dosha checking requires the complete rule, applicable reference points, exceptions, and cancellation conditions. A software label without that context should not be used to frighten someone or declare a fixed outcome.

A marriage-related condition assessed from Mars occupying specified houses from Lagna and, in many traditions, from the Moon and Venus.
Schools differ on the exact reference points and exceptions. A responsible judgement checks the full placement, house ownership, sign, aspects, strength, cancellation rules, and both charts; Mars in a listed house is not the end of the analysis.

A quantitative system that combines six classes of planetary strength.
It measures factors such as positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural, and aspectual strength. A high or low total is not the same as morally benefic or malefic; a strong planet may strongly deliver the kinds of results it signifies and rules in that chart.

The angular difference used to convert tropical planetary positions to a sidereal zodiac.
Different accepted Ayanamsha standards can place a planet at a slightly different degree and, near a boundary, in a different sign or Nakshatra. Comparisons between reports should first confirm the zodiac and Ayanamsha used.

The five-part calendrical framework of Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana.
A birth report's Panchang section records the five limbs prevailing around birth. The word Yoga here names a calendrical limb and should not be confused with a planetary Yoga formed in the horoscope.

A chart-specific judgement about whether strengthening the planet associated with a gemstone is appropriate.
Suitability cannot be decided from Sun sign, Moon sign, or a generic birth-month list alone. The planet's functional role, house lordship, condition, Dasha relevance, alternatives, and reasons not to strengthen it should be assessed; any guidance remains non-guaranteed, and gemstone identity or treatment should be independently verified by a recognised gem laboratory.
